Demographics of Recent News Stories

By analyzing Twitter and other social media services, we can figure out which parts of the country are talking about certain topics. This lets us see, for example, that people in Alaska and Kansas are individually much more likely to be talking about the "tea party" than people in other states, while someone in Arizona is far more likely to be talking about "immigration." Additionally, by inducing age and gender demographics from this same data, we can see that people talking about the tea party are far more likely to be over the age of 45. Indeed, the median age for most topical news stories is biased toward the upper end of the range. The younger demographic? Talkn about Justin Bieber.
